Wind River drops struggling DHS girls

Feb 3, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

It's the kind of game that sometimes can't be avoided. Class 2-A contender Wind River hosted an inexperienced Dubois squad Friday at Pavillion and rolled over the Lady Rams 69-37.

Dubois is still emerging from a winless season a year ago played with just five girls, and this year's squad sports only two seniors in Rachelle Leseberg and Katherine Finley. The remainder of the squad is freshman and sophomores.

Finley and Leseberg played the role of senior leaders well combining for 21 points to pace the Rams, but the Cougars are deep and talented this season.

Wind River head coach Justin Walker filled his scorebook with 15 players and used them all throughout the game. Many girls saw their first varsity action of the season, and often the game consisted of 10 players running back and forth on the floor as the ball was turned over constantly before anyone took a shot.

The Cougars jumped ahead 24-7 after one then poured in another 24 in the second period to take a commanding 48-16 lead at the half.

A 40-point lead seemed inevitable with the mercy rule coming into effect with its associated running clock. Josee Vogel hit a free throw with 14 seconds left in the third period to lift Wind River to a 64-24 lead, and the running clock started.

To Dubois's credit the girls rallied in the opening minutes of the final period on a 9-0 run all on baskets or free throws from Finley and Leseberg.

Tory Thoman hit a 3-pointer with 3:00 remaining in the game to end the scoring flurry.

Dubois hosted Ten Sleep on Saturday.

Wind River's run to the Southwest 2-A title depends on the outcome of a pair of games next weekend. The Cougars host Kemmerer on Friday and Big Piney on Saturday.
