Another razor-thin loss for Riverton girls

Feb 3, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

Remember the song from Three Dog Night called "One is the Loneliest Number"?

RHS Lady Wolverine girls basketball coach Ron Porter does, except he thinks they got the lyrics wrong.

"It should have been 'Three is the Loneliest Number,'" Porter said.

For the third consecutive game, the RHS Lady Wolverines lost by -- you guessed it -- three points, 44-41, to the Green River Lady Wolves Friday in Green River.

"We make mistakes at different periods in the game that end up costing us," Porter said.

After their first round of conference play, the Lady Wolverines are winless in the Class 4-A West at 0-5 and will next play in blue uniforms against Rock Springs next Saturday at home in Wolverine Gym, as the team works to increase prostate cancer awareness.

Overall Riverton's record is 3-16.

Sophomore guard Camey Fegler led all scorers with 18 points. Kiley Ridgway added eight and grabbed 12 rebounds.

"Camey took it to the basket well and created opportunities for us," Porter said.

Porter added that Annie Phister played her best game of the season, especially on defense.

"She was a factor and gave us what we needed underneath," Porter said.

The Wolverines limited their opportunities late in the game when Green River had possession with 31 seconds left to play, but Riverton could not foul until there were just six seconds left on the clock. After a timeout, and 94 feet away, Riverton got a shot off that was deflected.

"It gives you a lot more flexibility the sooner you foul," Porter said.

After Friday's game, Porter reiterated to his girls that they need to be playing their best basketball near the end of the season.

"(The close games are) a good sign. Basketball is a long season. We're at the point where if we allow this to fester and undermine our efforts, it could be devastating. I don't see that happening with these kids. I don't expect anything but positive results," Porter said.
