RHS wrestlers dominant in win over Lander
Feb 8, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
The Wolverines won nine of 14 matches Thursday in their last regular-season match.
All of Riverton High School's senior wrestlers won individual matches to secure a 48-27 team victory over Lander Valley High School in the annual clash on the mats.
Arhen Wempen, Beau Batista, Rudy Batista, T.J. Galey, Jacob Flescher and Dawson Steeds recorded victories for RHS in their final home regular-season matches Thursday night at Tonkin Activities Center.
Beau and Rudy Batista, at 145 pounds and 152 pounds, along with Galey in the 170-pound class, helped the Wolverines pull away from the LVHS Tigers with first-period pins in the middle of the match to take control of the dual. The match started at the 106-pound class.
"It's a huge to win our last dual at Tonkin," Beau Batista said. "We were pretty fired up. We were ready to go. We didn't want it to come down to the last match liked it did last year. We wanted to be on top the whole time."
Flescher added another pin at 220 pounds. Steeds finished the night with a 9-4 victory over Lander's Kegan Wells in the heavyweight division.
"We didn't talk about getting pins," Batista said. "It just happened that way."
Batista didn't place at the Ron Thon Invitational last weekend and knew it was time to get back on track.
"It was necessary to get my head right and come back with a good match," Batista said.
The Wolverines are the fifth-ranked team in Class 4-A this week, down from No. 3.
"You can't ask for anything more than all your seniors to win on Senior Night," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "I have a lot of respect for Lander coach Nick Fulton and what he does. He always has his guys ready."
LVHS is currently ranked No. 5 in Class 3-A.
"Riverton is a quality team," Fulton said. "They have a great group of seniors. They have done a nice job of getting them prepared."
RHS will take the weekend off to prepare for the Class 4-A West regional tournament Feb 15-16 at Wolverine Gym.
"We hammered them pretty good in practice this week," Galey said. "This is the time of the season that you have worked for the past three and a half months. We are hoping they will peak for regionals and state."

Riverton's Gavin Wilson gave the home squad the first pin of the night with a fall at 120 pounds over Ben McKinney.
McKinney filled in for regular starter Ty Alexander who was sick for the match. Wilson finished fourth Saturday a at the Ron Thon Invitational. Alexander was sixth.
T.J. Turner added a victory at 138 pounds for the Wolverines. At 182 pounds, Jason Hanson from LVHS won a 12-6 decision over Reece Prosser.
Late in the match, Prosser was on the verge of pinning Hanson, but the LVHS wrestler had an injury timeout to halt the contest for about a minute. Hanson held on for the victory over Prosser.
In the 195-pound class, Riverton's Casey Savage took a 4-2 decision over Robert Sloss. Savage scored a takedown in the first period for a 2-1 lead.
Sloss knotted the score at 2-2 with an escape. In the third, Savage put in a reversal for the two-point win.
"I thought that we wrestled hard in the matches that we were favored in," Fulton said. "We moved some guys around to fill up our lineup. Our guys didn't back down even when they are going against some of their better seniors. We had a couple of matches that were close that I would have liked to win, but it didn't happen."
