WIHS girls pummel Big Piney, avenge early loss to Kemmerer

Feb 10, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

ETHETE -- You might say it was a yawner Friday night at Ethete, as the Wyoming Indian girls held visiting Big Piney to just two points in the first and fourth periods. The Lady Chiefs flirted with the mercy rule for much of the final period before taking a lopsided 54-19 win over the Punchers.

On Saturday, it was anything but boring. The Chiefs avenged an early loss to Kemmerer in a big way, 59-39.

The weekend sweep vaults the Chiefs back into contention with a pair of key games coming later this week. A sweep of Shoshoni at home on Thursday, and a win at Pavillion over league leading Wyoming Indian, would lock the Chiefs in a tie with the Cougars for the conference's top seed in the upcoming 2-A West regional.

Head coach Aleta Moss has a very young squad this season but the girls are starting to jell just in time for the West regional in two weeks.

The team is rallying around the stellar play of sophomore post Brindi Lock, who leads the squad in scoring and rebounding. Lock tallied 17 in limited play Friday night, while Loveeda White notched a dozen for the Chiefs.

Wyoming Indian's pressure was too much for a struggling Big Piney team, which appeared mechanical in its offensive execution and totally ineffective in trying to break Wyoming Indian's pressure defense.

Brandi Savage hit a follow shot for Big Piney's only points in the opening minutes. Savage led the Punchers with five points.

With a huge lead, Moss played here entire bench. Eight WIHS girls scored in the game.
