Sheridan knocks off Rustler men

Feb 12, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Central Wyoming College fell out of a three-way tie for first place in the Region IX men's basketball standings, losing a 75-68 decision Saturday to Sheridan College on the road.

Sheridan College anwd Casper College are tied for the top spot at 10-2.

The CWC Rustlers are one game behind at 9-3. Casper College knocked off Miles Community College 70-57 over the weekend.

The Rustlers are 4-2 in conference play away from Rustler Gym.

"It's always tough to play on the road in our league," CWC men's coach Shelby Lindley said. "Sheridan came out from the start and played really well. They shot the ball extremely well in the first half.

"We didn't have trouble scoring, we just couldn't stop them. Their wings were really good. They had some players step up in the big moment."

Armani Flannigan and Tanner Newbold had good games for the Rustlers.

"Both of them were really good on offense," Lindley said. "They both gave us a lift."

Flannigan put down 26 points, and Newbold finished with 15.

"We are very banged up right now as a team," Lindley said. "We are sick and just hurt. We have to get healthy for the remaining four games and be ready to go for the Region IX tournament. "

Sophomores honored

CWC will honor six sophomores Wednesday night against Miles Community College.

Flannigan, Davion Pearson, Jordan Phouthavong and Kyler Williams have played for CWC for two years.

The four helped CWC win 20 games last year and 19 games this year.

"They are all four great kids and good students," Lindley said.

The other two sophomores are Ryan Thomas and Austin Hudson.

Thomas transfered from Western Wyoming College and Hudson came from Central Arizona College.

"Both are great kids that have came right in and meshed well with the other sophomores and have four-year level. It's been fun to see them grow as people. All six of these sophomores are great to be around. They have started a tradition that is going to be hard to uphold, but that is a good thing."
