Three Cowgirls gain postseason honors

Three members of the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team, Chaundra Sewell, Ashley Sickles and Kayla Woodward, were recognized as the Mountain West announced the 2012 All-Conference Team.

"I'm extremely pleased for the honors bestowed upon Chaundra, Kayla and Ashley," said head coach Joe Legerski. "Without team success it is difficult to have individual success. As a team we were competitive throughout league play and thus the honors for three deserving players."

Sewell was a Second Team All-MW selection and named to the All-Defensive Team for the first time in her career. It's the second honor for Sewell as she was named Honorable Mention All-Conference a year ago. In addition to that, true freshman Kayla Woodward earned Third Team All-Conference, while junior Ashley Sickles was named Honorable Mention All-Mountain West.

Sewell, from Broomfield, Colo., averaged a team leading 8.5 rebounds plus 14.9 points per contest in Mountain West play. She ranked second in rebounding, seventh in scoring, eighth in free throw percentage and 11th in field goal percentage. She recorded double-figures in 19 of 27 games along with 11 double-doubles.

Woodward a true freshman from Sheridan, Wyo. led the team in scoring in Mountain West action with 15.2 points per contest along with 6.4 rebounds. She was third in three-point field goal percentage, fourth in minutes played, sixth in scoring and rebounding, seventh in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and three-point field goals made, ninth in steals and 14th in assists. Woodward was also named MW player of the week twice and tallied double-figures in ten games.

Sickles earns Honorable Mention All-MW for the first time in her career. For the conference season, she averaged 10 points and 5.5 rebounds, plus a team high 12 blocked shots. Sickles ranked seventh in minutes played, tenth in blocked shots, 14th in rebounding and three-point field goal percentage and 15th in scoring.

The Cowgirls open up play at the Mountain West Conference Tournament Wednesday, March 7, in Las Vegas. Their first-round opponent will be the TCU Horned Frogs. Tip off is set for 3:30 p.m. beat TCU in their first round MWC tournament game Wednesday by a score of 61-44.
