National FFA Week: Shoshoni
Feb 18, 2013 - By KayLee Jo Fegler, Shoshoni FFA Chapter
From keeping the chapter going to helping out the community, the Shoshoni FFA has had a productive year.
During the summer, the chapter helped with the annual Labor Day Rodeo in Shoshoni. The chapter took money at the gates and helped run the chutes and concessions.
The chapter also worked on cleaning up the highway from Shoshoni to the Lysite area.
Also, the biggest summer project so far, the Shoshoni FFA Chapter made a community garden near the Shoshoni Recreation Department. The members made each individual plot in the garden and put up new fencing to keep the garden safe. The plots are open to purchase for the community, and the chapter is looking forward to all the vegetables, fruits and flowers in the spring.
During Homecoming week, the Shoshoni FFA put together the annual Redneck Relays and Bonfire, both open to the community. It gave the community a chance to interact with the school and the chapter and bring everyone in the town of Shoshoni closer.
The chapter also helped out at the Riverton Good Samaritan Shelter. The chapter members helped clean up and fold clothes and sheets. They also donated more than 400 canned goods to the shelter around Christmas.
On Feb. 2, the chapter used its floral skills to make decorations for the Riverton Firefighters Banquet. The members made floral arrangements out of firefighter helmets and incorporated red, white and blue; the Elk's Club was decorated to perfection.
Members have been working on making tie blankets to send to the Children's Hospital of Denver. The chapter will be sending 15 blankets to help families and children in need and let them know the members are thinking of them.
The chapter recently made valentines for the Shoshoni Senior Center. The members have become close with the seniors and wanted to connect with them once again by sending them cards and wishing them a Happy Valentine's Day.
Coming up is the Shoshoni Greenhand Banquet and Labor Auction. The Greenhand Banquet will be held in correspondence with the March meeting on March 7. April will bring the Chapter Labor Auction, where community members can purchase workers for any and all help needed.
National FFA Week begins Monday, Feb. 18. The Shoshoni FFA Chapter will participate with a blue and gold day Monday. The school is to wear blue and gold while the members wear official dress to represent the Wranglers in the pig tail game against the Cougars. The members will recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the game.
On Tuesday, FFA members will come to school at 7 a.m. to serve the teachers food for the annual Teacher Appreciation Breakfast. The meal will be served in the ag shop to show the teachers and faculty what the FFA program is all about and to raise awareness.
On Wednesday, the chapter recruitment committee will have an ice cream social to recruit new members and to teach all the non-members what FFA is all about and to encourage them to join. The week will be cut short because of regional basketball and state wrestling, but you can bet the members will be supporting their teams Thursday and Friday.
