Riverton boys clinch state tourney bid and bye, beating KW 52-48
Feb 18, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer
The Riverton Wolverines climbed back from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to down the Kelly Walsh Trojans 52-48 Saturday night in Casper.
The win was Riverton's 20th of the year with just two losses. The Wolverines are all alone on top of the Class 4-A West conference with a 7-1 record with just two games to play, one of which is a home game against Green River at 6:30 p.m. this Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Wolverine Gym.
More importantly, Riverton has gained a first-round bye in the Class 4-A West regional tournament a week from Thursday in Green River and an automatic qualification to the state tournament.
But Saturday's game will be remembered most for Riverton's comeback on Kelly Walsh's senior night. The Wolverines outscored KW 18-6 in the final period.
"I didn't think our defensive intensity was good. You can't get better every night, but we came back, gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game and we did. It was a good team win. Everybody contributed and did some great stuff," RHS head coach Dick Quayle told KVOW broadcasters after the game.
Charging back in the fourth quarter, Seth Quayle got two, Jordan Belville took a charge to gain a turnover, and Xavier Webb drilled a mid-range jumper to tie the game at 44-44.
Quayle added another basket, as did Belville. But it was Belville's two free throws with 19 seconds left that sealed the game for the Wolverines.
Quayle led all scores with 19.
