Tiger boys wallop Cody, beaten in OT by Powell

Feb 18, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Lander Valley High School exploded for a 21-point first quarter Friday night at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse vs. Cody in a Class 3-A West boys basketball conference game.

Lander's Lucas Watkins ended the game with 23 points as the Cody Broncos didn't have an answer for the big center. The Tigers rolled to a 51-23 victory.

LVHS lost a heartbreaker 46-44 in overtime to the Powell Panthers Saturday night.

In the loss, Watkins put in 18 points, and Casey Winger scored 10. Powell outscored LVHS 7-5 in the extra period.

The Panthers hit seven 3-pointers, and LVHS had only two from beyond the arc.

The win started the most pivotal weekend of the season because LVHS, Powell and Lyman were all tied for second place in the Class 3-A West standings.

"Every game is important for seeding," LVHS coach Terry Hopkin said. "Our kids really stepped it up defensively against Cody. I think Friday night was the best four quarters that I have seen Lucas play."

Lyman upset Star Valley on the road Friday night, handing the Braves their first conference loss of the season.

"Lucas was a little more forceful in taking it to the hoop," Hopkin said. "His offensive rebounding was unbelievable."

One of the rebounds was a dunk for Watkins that gave a loud cheer from the crowd.

"You don't see that in Wyoming basketball a lot," Hopkin said. "I'm proud of Lucas and the way he has played."

LVHS players Jordan Crane and Winger were the key players in running the offense.

"It's a team effort," Hopkin said. "We had a lot of guys getting the basketball to Lucas. He performed at the highest level."

In the first quarter, Watkins had six points. Alex Hogan and Jordan Crane ended with four apiece.

"The rest of the guys really worked hard on defense," Hopkin said. "There were a lot of great assists."

The score after the first quarter was 21-7 Lander.

"We put a scare right into Cody," Hopkin said. "We had to keep fighting them off. We were able to control the game with our offense. We really controlled the game with our defense."

LVHS was in command at halftime at 28-10.

"I'm proud of these young men," Hopkin said. "They haven't played together very much. They are all contributing. I'm proud of the whole group."

Crane knocked in eight points, and Winger finished with six.
