Chief boys start strong with 32-point rout of Greybull

Feb 22, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

It was a two-point game just three weeks ago in Greybull, but the Wyoming Indian boys left no doubt Thursday afternoon at Wolverine gym in a 75-42 blowout of the Buffs in opening round Class 2-A West regional tournament action.

Wyoming Indian's balance was just too much for Greybull. After a slow start, the Chiefs put 65 points on the board in the final three periods of the game.

The Wyoming Indian side of the scorebook was nearly full, with 11 players scoring in the contest.

Senior post Trevor Williamson led the Chiefs with 14 points, while Alvin Spoonhunter hit for 13. Tyler Penetac came off the bench for 11.

Greybull had 10 players score in the game, paced by nine points from Paul Stewart.

The Chiefs struggled offensively in the first period, with Greybull breaking the press and slowing the game in the half-court.

That strategy fell apart in the second via the Wyoming Indian long ball, with Spoonhunter and Joey Aragon hitting treys that built the lead to 21-8. A second Spoonhunter 3-pointer rolled around the inside of the rim, losing momentum before falling through with 4:11 left in the half.

Spoonhunter put the cap on his trio of 3-pointers with a final one in the period with a minute left in the half. The Chiefs led 33-17 at the break.

The second half highlighted Wyoming Indian's depth. Trevor Williamson and Joseph Howell pounded away outside, while Penetac, Donald Clifford and Shane Willow ran the floor well. Junior Wilson Clifford had his usual solid all-around game as the Chiefs cruised to the win.

Wyoming Indian faces Rocky Mountain at 4:30 in Wolverine gym in the first boys semi-final.

Rocky blew out Kemmerer 58-27 Thursday at Central Wyoming College.
