Thermop puts WIHS girls into consolation play

Feb 22, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

Just five days after handing Class 2-A Northwest conference leader Lovell their only league loss of the season, the Thermopolis Lady Bobcats survived a cold-shooting first quarter before coming on strong to down the Wyoming Indian High School Lady Chiefs 47-35 in first-round play of the Class 2-A West regional girls basketball tournament. The game was played before a near-capacity crowd Thursday at Central Wyoming College.

With the win, Thermopolis advanced to Friday's 3 p.m. semifinal game at Riverton High School against the Wind River Lady Cougars, the top seed from the southwest, who beat Greybull 65-52 Thursday.

"The win against Lovell was big win for the girls because now we know we can play with them," Thermopolis head coach Brett Hoover said, adding that this game shouldn't have been as close as it was because the Lady Bobcats hit just 11-26 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Chiefs were down 18-14 at halftime despite hitting only one second-quarter field goal and took a 23-20 lead early in the third quarter after a Brindi Lock field goal and Leevida White free throw. After Lady Bobcat Dana Bjorhus hit a 3-point shot midway through the quarter, Wyoming Indian did not lead again.

Wyoming Indian played an 8:30 a.m. loser-out game against Greybull Friday at RHS. The Lady Chiefs must win Friday's game and an 8:30 a.m. Saturday game to qualify for the state tournament.

"They want to go to state. We really wanted to get past this game. We'll have to keep attacking," Lady Chief coach Aleta Moss said.

Bjorhus, who averages just under 14 points per game and is the second-leading scorer in the Class 2-A Northwest behind Riversides's Cydnie Clark, led all scorers with 17 points, and Jordan Leyba added 12.

The Lady Chiefs were led by Lock with 14 points.
