RHS boys West 4-A champs even with loss to Evanston

Riverton takes the No. 1 seed and an automatic state-tournament bid to this week's 4-A West regional. UPDATE: The Riverton boys open their regional tournament Friday, March 1st at 8:30 p.m. against the winner of the Rock Springs vs. Natrona game (the day before) in Green River.

In the end, the game didn't change the final standings for the Riverton Wolverines boys basketball team.

But a final 46-41 loss Saturday at Evanston does soften late-season momentum for RHS as it heads to Green River and the Class 4-A West regional tournament as the No. 1 seed.

The tournament begins in Green River Thursday.

Despite the conference loss, Riverton is the regular season league champion with an 8-2 conference record and 21-3 overall record.

The Wolverines earned the title when Rock Springs upset Evanston 52-42 on Friday and handed the Red Devils their third conference loss.

The Wolverines likely open their regional tourney this coming Friday against the winner of the Kelly Walsh vs. Green River game on Thursday in Green River. (See Update Above)

With Saturday's win, Evanston ends the regular season with the second seed and an automatic bid to the state tournament.

Evanston plays the winner of the Rock Springs vs. Casper Natrona game in its first tournament game Friday.

Second-ranked Riverton held a slim 18-17 lead at halftime but was outscored 19-9 in the third quarter by the fourth-ranked Red Devil,s and the Wolverines could get no closer than four.

Seth Quayle led Riverton with 14 points, and Jordan Belville added 12.

Conference leading scorer Xavier Webb had an off day for Riverton with five points. Point guard Kade Salisbury fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Evanston's Matt Johnson had a game-high 19.

He trailed Webb by about half a point per game into he West 4-A scoring chase coming into the game.
