Rustler men close out regular season at 22-6, tops since hoops revival

Feb 26, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Central Wyoming College completed the Region IX men's basketball regular season last week with a pair of road victories to end the year at 22-6.

That's the highest win total for the Rustlers since the college reinstated basketball six years ago. The old mark was 20 wins, set last season.

CWC crushed Dawson Community College 75-39 Wednesday, then ran past Little Big Horn College 98-81 on Thursday night.

CWC finished third in the Region IX North division with a 12-4 mark. Casper College and Sheridan College tied for first at 13-3.

Casper College beat Sheridan College Saturday night in Casper to lock up the title. Casper College will host the Region IX tournament.

"I feel like we played really well to take some momentum into the Region IX tournament," CWC men's coach Shelby Lindley said. "It was a quick turnaround for us, but if we want to win the Region IX, we have to do that. We are excited to set the school record in wins with 22, but we are not content."

CWC opens the must-win tournament at 6 p.m. Sunday against Trinidad State Junior College at Casper College.

20-point scorers

In the high-scoring win over Little Big Horn College, CWC's Armani Flannigan led the way with 25 points and eight rebounds.

Tanner Newbold drilled five 3-pointers on his way to 22 points. Davion Pearson put in 15 points.

"We had a lot of role guys step up and play really well for us," Lindley said.

CWC's Roozario Wiggins had 13 points vs. Dawson.
