Tyler Rupe, Sean Watts, Shepp Campbell and Jesse Hawk should be in contention for the 4x200-meter relay title Friday and Saturday representing Riverton High School at the state indoor track meet in Gillette.

The four closed out the regular season last Friday by winning a title in Laramie.

The team was clocked with a time of 1:38.55.

Green River finished second in 1:38.73. Evanston was third at 1:39.12.

"I was really impressed with how our boys 4x200-meter relay team did in Laramie," Riverton coach Tawn Gopp said. "They don't have the fastest time going into the state meet, but they are in the hunt for a state championship."

Watts was fourth in the 55 meters (6.87) and in the 200 meters (24.47). Rupe came in third in the 400-meter run (54.74). Hawk was second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.20). Campbell placed second in the high jump at 5-10.

"All of them are pretty decent runners," Gopp said. "We are working on handoffs. We can probably take another second off in the handoff. The handoff on the 4x200-meter relay is real critical because it's so tight."

Gillette has the fastest entry time in the state in the 4x200-meter relay at 1:33.

"There are a couple of other teams at 1:35," Gopp said. "To get on the medal stand, they will have to go 1:35 or better."

The track athletes started the season in January.

"Most of the team got personal records in Laramie," Gopp said. "Everybody is pretty healthy right now."

Savage in contention

Riverton's Lane Savage won the shot put at the Laramie meet with a throw of 51-2.

"Lane was just having fun. That makes a big difference," Gopp said.

Savage is sitting in the top three in the state.

"Lane seems to be having a really good attitude going into this weekend," Gopp said. "If he has another personal record, that should put him in the top five."

Riverton's Tasha Maddock has an opportunity to place for the Wolverines in the 400 and 800.

State meet

Ticket prices for day passes at the state meet are $4 for adults and $2 for students.

All-session passes are $6 for adults and $4 for students.

"State indoor is going to be big this year," Gopp said. "Most of the teams are bringing anywhere from 15 to 20 athletes."

Teams at the state indoor meet are Gillette, Big Piney, Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Cheyenne South, Cody, Evanston, Glenrock, Green River, Kelly Walsh, Lander Valley High School. Lovell, Mountain View, Casper Natrona, Rock Springs, Sheridan, Star Valley, Thermopolis and Worland.
