Bennett sworn in to county attorney seat
Mar 1, 2013 - By Christina George, Staff Writer
Fremont County's new prosecuting attorney, H. Michael Bennett, officially took office Friday after being sworn in by 9th Judicial District Court Judge Norman E. Young.
County elected officials, courthouse staff, attorneys, law enforcement, and Bennett's family and friends packed the Fremont County Commission chambers to witness the ceremony.
"I whole heartedly accept the challenge," Bennett said after being sworn in.
The Lander native and former Cheyenne attorney thanked his wife for her support and his parents, "for raising me right, although I did end up as an attorney."
All kidding aside, Bennett expressed gratitude for those in the room, including the Fremont County Attorney's Office staff and county deputy prosecutor Pat LeBrun, whom he called "an indispensable part of the office."
On Feb. 19, Fremont County commissioners chose Bennett over LeBrun for the appointment. Bennett replaces Brian Varn, who resigned Feb. 28 because of family obligations. Bennett will serve the remainder of Varn's term and will be up for election in November 2014.
"We've got a tremendous amount of work ahead of us," Bennett told the large crowd.
He promised open lines of communication and working together in making "Fremont County the wonderful place that it is."
Young shared a few words of wisdom with Fremont County's newest official. He said taking action on something can almost always wait until the next morning, and he encouraged Bennett to start each day by planning to do the right thing.
