LVHS girls qualify for state, will be No. 4 seed from West

Mar 3, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

POWELL -- Lander Valley High School is back in the Class 3-A girls state basketball tournament after securing a spot Saturday morning with a 48-43 victory over Cody in a consolation game at the West regional tournament in Powell.

Shanda Post helped make the trip possible for LVHS, scoring 22 points in the do-or-die contest. Lander's last trip to the state tournament came in the 2009 season.

This will be the first time Post and her senior teammates will be playing at the state tournament.

"I have wanted to go to the state tournament for four years," Post said. "The last three years I have wanted it more than anything. To know that my teammates gave it their all is amazing."

LVHS lost to Powell 54-50 in triple overtime on Thursday night to start the tournament. LVHS was the No. 6 seed for the tournament. Powell outscored LVHS 11-7 in the marathon contest.

"The loss to Powell got us going," Post said. "We brought our momentum into the next two games."

Post scored 23 points in the heartbreaking loss. Keesha Rowan ended with 12 points.

"Thursday was a rough one," Post said. "By the third overtime, we were pretty tired. That was a game that either one of us deserved."

In the consolation game Friday morning, LVHS ran away from Pinedale 52-34 to stay alive in the tournament. Post scored a team-high 15 points.

"It's great for the kids to be going to the state tournament," LVHS coach Spike Robinson said. "Our seniors deserved to go, especially after the game Thursday when they played their hearts out. They earned it. It was just a great job."

LVHS lost to Powell 56-46 in the third-place game Saturday night.

LVHS will be the No. 4 seed for the state tournament.

"Cody is a really difficult matchup for us," Robinson said. "They are just so big. Cody has such great size. Their guards are good enough that they can really work the ball and get it to the big kids."

Post was all over the scoring column in the first half. Late in the second quarter, the LVHS senior hit four straight free throws to give LVHS a 19-12 lead.

"Shanda has to play well for us to be successful because that is just the way that we have it going," Robinson said. "She had a key game."

In the third period, Post nailed a 3-pointer for a 27-20 lead with four minutes left in the period.

Cody took the lead at 38-36 in the final period. Schamber hit her 3-pointer for a 39-38 advantage.

Down the stretch, Jones and Rowan traded off baskets to celebrate the victory. LVHS missed six free throws in the final eight minutes.

"Missing those free throws was heart-stopping," Robinson said. "All we had to do was hit a couple of them to put the game away."

Robinson said Cody was really crashing the boards in the final period.

"Cody knew that they needed the ball," Robinson said. "As soon as we got a rebound, Cody didn't have anybody back. We were just able to run out and get those two easy layups.
