Tigers win two at 3-A West to make state field

Mar 3, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

POWELL -- After a 42-37 loss to Jackson in the opening round Thursday at the Class 3-A West regional boys basketball tournament at Powell High School, Lander Valley High School won two convincing games for a spot in the state tournament.

The LVHS Tigers pounded Pinedale 57-33 Friday morning in a consolation game. Then, with a state tournament berth on the line, LVHS eliminated Lyman 52-36 on Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Crane led LVHS with 17 points against Lyman.

"It's very exciting to go to state," Crane said. "We were a little nervous about the game with Lyman. We needed to come out with intensity and we did. I was really proud of the team."

Lyman entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed.

"Lyman is always a really good team," Crane said. "We just played intense defense, and that translated into a good defense."

A couple of hours later, Cody edged the Tigers 30-29 in the third-place game.

LVHS will now be the No. 4 seed for the state tournament.

The double-elimination 3-A tournament begins on Thursday in Casper.

(Saturday)

After the first two periods Saturday afternoon, the Tigers were ahead 20-17.

In the third period, Lander's Casey Winger made it a 27-21 lead after three periods.

It was all LVHS in the final quarter, as Crane started the ball rolling with a 3-pointer.

"The 3-pointer changed the momentum," Crane said.

Winger and Crane added back-to-back field goals to make the scoreboard read 34-25.

Lyman started to foul LVHS with five minutes left in regulation.

Crane hit three out of four free throws to extent the lead for good.

LVHS was 21-35 from the free-throw line.

"During practice, we have been working on our free throws," Crane said. "We are a lot better than we were at the start of the year."

Jess Oldham and Crane started the job of guarding Lyman's best player, Cisco Taylor.

Taylor ended with 15 points, but several points came when the game was in hand for LVHS.

"We started to guard him on the 3-point line," Crane said. "He is very quick. He is good on his left hand. He can pull up and shoot it. We just had to stay with him. It was a good defensive performance."

LVHS 57, Pinedale 33

LVHS put it right to Pinedale on Friday morning outscoring the No.8 seed Wranglers 16-6 in the first period.

Watkins had six points and Crane finished with two 3-pointers. After being up 31-17 at the break, the Tigers put the game away with a 17-5 third quarter.

Crane led LVHS with 12 points. Watkins and Jaxon Hedges scored eight points apiece.
