Mar 3, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports WriterCASPER -- It was a tale of two halves for the St. Stephen's Eagles early Friday afternoon at Casper College. The Eagles' two leading scorers each played about half of an overtime donnybrook with Guernsey-Sunrise.
The Vikings ended the Eagles' season with a 65-58 win in 36 minutes.
St. Stephen's didn't field its regular starting five as Coke Littleshield was sidelined for nearly the entire opening half with an ankle injury in the opening minutes of the game. He re-entered the game in the third period and played all of the extended fourth quarter, tallying 14 points.
Lakota Oldman led the Eagles with 24 points, all scored in the opening half. Oldman fouled out midway through the final period after being held scoreless since the half time break.
The game shouldn't have gone to an extra four minutes at all, as a scoring error in the official book gave a Guernsey free throw to St. Stephen's guard Sam Teran by mistake. The game should have ended in regulation with the Vikings taking a 55-53 win, but the error was of the non-correctable variety. Despite protests from the Guernsey coaching staff the error stayed in the books and the game went to overtime.
The Eagles tumultuous season came to an end in the extra period behind a combined 41 points from Guernsey players Gage Cunningham and Treasure Hollister.Cunningham tallied 21 and Hollister 20 in the winning effort. St. Stephen's freshman forward Jaron Arthur had a solid game for the Eagles, finishing with nine points.
The world of Class 1-A basketball was upended late Friday by Snake River's 51-49 upset of top-ranked and previously unbeaten Burlington in the semi-finals at Casper College.
