Rustlers ousted from Region IX tourney

CWC had advanced to the quarterfinals with a double-overtime victory Sunday night.

Otero Junior College eliminated Central Wyoming College 59-56 Monday night in the quarterfinals of the Region IX men's basketball tournament at Casper College.

CWC had an opportunity to tie the game on a long 3-pointer from Armani Flannigan that failed at the buzzer.

The CWC Rustlers outlasted Trinidad State Junior College 72-67 in double overtime Sunday night in the opening round.

At Scottsbluff, Neb., McCook Community College won an 80-74 decision over CWC to end the season in the first-round of the Region IX women's basketball tournament.

The CWC men came into the Region IX tournament as the No. 3 seed from the north division.

The Casper College Thunderbirds won the north league men's title to host the single-elimination tournament.

Northwest College upset Casper College 80-74 in the late game Monday for a spot in the semifinals.

Otero faces Northwest College in one of the semifinals on Tuesday night.

In the other semifinal, Northeastern battles North Platte.

The title game is 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Otero 59, CWC 56

Otero Junior College built a 26-23 lead at the break over the Rustlers.

After intermission, CWC came out and pounded the ball inside and took a 10-point lead midway through the second half.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, Otero overtook the lead for the victory.

Flannigan scored 17 points in the loss.

Teammates Austin Hudson finished with 12 points, and Davion Pearson scored 11.

Hudson had a team-high seven rebounds.

CWC 72, Trinidad State 67 20T

Free-throw shooting from Pearson was the difference in the game on Sunday night.

Pearson finished the contest going 12-for-12 from the charity stripe.

Pearson scored 19 points and was credited with 12 rebounds in a solid all-around effort.

The two teams were deadlocked at 57-57 after regulation.

Trinidad and CWC scored four points apiece in the first overtime.

In the second overtime, the Rustlers outscored their opponent 11-6 for the win.

Hudson delivered 20 points and 11 rebounds.
