Lander swim clubbers fifth at state winter meet

Mar 10, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Lander Swim Club placed fifth Sunday at the Winter Short Course Championship in Laramie.

Landed scored 1,592.5 points in the three-day meet.

Gillette won the team title at 3,679 points.

The host Laramie team finished second 3,063 points. The Cheyenne swim club finished third (2,004 points).

"This year, we had far more qualifiers than who actually attended," Lander swim coach Jennifer Schaff said. "State meets cost a lot of time and money to parents and the athletes, so sometimes it's hard to encourage people to go."

Lander had 32 swimmers attend the state meet.

"The finish equates to being the only 3-A school team among all the 4-A schools," Schaff said.

In the championship meet, swimmers in the top 16 placers can score for the team.

"Almost all our swimmers scored for our team in every event they swam," Schaff said.

Lander had finalists (top eight) in almost every age group.

"Our 8-and-under boys scored the majority of the points winning first and second place in all of the 8-and-under events," Schaff said.

Schaff said most of the 12-and-under swimmers practice four days a week Sunday though Thursday.

"The majority of our state qualifying athletes are very dedicated, but they also enjoy competition," Schaff said.

High point award

Jonny Kulow, 8, won the high point award for the 8-and-under boys.

Kulow scored the most overall points of all the 8-and-under swimmers in the state meet.

"Jonny is a wonderful, technical swimmer," Schaff said.

"He loves to have fun, but really loves to complete. He is very close to setting a couple of state records in his age group."

Dylan Huelskamp is another strong swimmer in the young division.

"Dylan works very hard," Schaff said. "He understands the sport of swimming in away most learn as high schoolers.

Talented girls

Maya Peterson the only 8-and-under girl to swim meet impressed Schaff with her performance.

"She did amazingly well," Schaff said.

Peterson scored second in most of her events.

"She is very determined to do well," Schaff said.

Meredith Smithbaker competed in nine events in the 10-and-under girls. She took first in the 200 freestyle.

"That is a tremendous feat since it was one of the last events of the meet when everyone is exhausted," Schaff said.
