Mar 15, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorThe pieces are there for Riverton High School track and field co-head coaches Tawn Gopp and Jorah Griffith to mold the Wolverines into a competitive team in the Class 4-A West.
The co-head coaches are working with 60 athletes for the spring season.
Gopp is in charge of the boys program.
Griffith is at the helm of the girls team.
"Our guys team is bigger than our girls, but we have pretty good numbers," Gopp said.
RHS has 47 boys and 13 girls on the early roster.
"With the guys, I happy that we have a lot of freshmen out," Gopp said. "We have some good senior leadership."
The Wolverines started practice two weeks ago.
"We have picked up several of the basketball players in the last week," Gopp said. "I'm kind of excited about those guys. They have a lot of good energy to bring to the team."
Riverton's Lane Savage finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 48-10.25 at the state indoor meet in Gillette.
"Earlier on the season in the smaller meets, I think that you will see Lane place first or second," Gopp said.
In practice, Savage is throwing the shot more than 50 feet.
"If Lane is consistent right at 50 feet, he will be in most of the meets," Gopp said. "He is really strong."
Savage didn't do the discus in the indoor season.
"I'm not sure how he is stacked up there," Gopp said. "His form looks good right now."
Sean Watts should score a lot of Riverton points in the 100 meters and 200 meters. Watts also will be a member of the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays.
"Sean had a great indoor season," Gopp said. "He showed a lot of potential. He is one of the faster ones in the state right now in the sprints. He is showing some good leadership."
Brandon Fullerton is back in the 400 meters.
Fullerton qualified for state last year as a freshman in the event. Fullerton was a member of the Riverton High School boys basketball team this winter.
The Wolverines finished second in the state last Saturday at the Class 4-A state tournament.
The RHS girls team has a lot of underclassmen.
The Wolverines will be using the first meets of the season on where to place their athletes.
RHS starts the season Saturday at the Glen Legler Memorial Earlybird in Casper.
Riverton's first home meet is Wednesday, March 27, in a dual with Lander Valley High School at Wolverine Track.
The winner will be awarded the Riverton-Lander traveling trophy.
The Roy Peck Invitational is scheduled Saturday, April 6, in Riverton.
