RHS boys see late goal erased, settle for 2-2 tie in opener

Playing in their season-opening match in Sheridan, Riverton Wolverine soccer players Tristan White and Logan Hartbank each scored goals, and White nearly added a third. But, after overtime play, Riverton tied Sheridan 2-2 in a non-conference match at Homer Scott Field.
"I thought we played really well. I guess the challenge of the day was to see how bad they wanted it and to see what they were made out of. They played their hearts out, and that was encouraging to see," Riverton Wolverine head coach Erly Cornejo said.
Sheridan got on the board first in the 15th minute but White responded with his first goal in the 25th minute. Riverton took the lead in the 59th minute, but Sheridan tied it up in the 66th minute.
"Their first goal was after Mike Jones made a real nice save and it came back out. He got his fingertips on it and it rolled in. We defended well as a whole team" Cornejo said.
Cornejo said that Sheridan is "really good and will be in the thick of things."
The Wolverines thought they had scored the go-ahead goal in the second overtime when White pushed a shot outside the box that beat Sheridan's keeper and found the left side of the net.
On the play, White was fouled by Sheridan's center fullback.
"They gave us a free kick instead of a goal. It was horrible. The kids feel that we won. Aaron Nirider played him a nice through ball. The center back pushed off of him as he was shooting. The ball found the left corner. It was a great shot too. It's too bad he wasn't rewarded," Cornejo said.
Riverton hosts Class 3-A Worland in its home opener this Friday evening at Wolverine Field. Game time has not been determined, but it is likely that the boys varsity match will follow the RHS girls' home opener Friday afternoon.
