Martin Ryan Mason was born Jan. 16, 1951, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Roger Costella and Margery Jean Mason. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1969. While in high school, he worked as a plumbers' assistant.

He married Candace "Candy" Elaine Christensen on Sept. 4, 1970, in Peterson, Iowa.

He worked in the construction business before going into partnership with his dad and brother in a Coast-To-Coast Franchise. He moved his family to Wyoming after he advanced to district manager in the Coast-To-Coast Corporation in January 1983. He later changed positions to corporate computer system sales and retired in 2011.

While his children, Misty and Matt, were in high school and college, his family said he enjoyed attending their many athletic events. Motorcycles, walking and hiking with his dog, Maggie, barbecuing, and holidays with his family were all things he enjoyed.
