Feb 3, 2012 - By Emily Etheredge Staff WriterThe snow arrived just in time to provide a proper backdrop for the Wild West Winter Carnival's weekend festivities.
Saturday will see an array of activities. Ice sculpting begins at 9 a.m. on Main Street in downtown Riverton, and artists from the region will compete for trophies in the beginner, intermediate and professional classes. The sculptures will adorn Main Street until they melt.
The Riverton Balloon Club will sponsor free tethered balloon rides starting at 10 a.m. at Riverton City Park.
At 11 a.m., hole-in-one golf starts at Riverton City Park. Participants can try to get a hole in one on a 100-yard hole, and the person closest to the pin wins a cash prize.
The Fremont County Fairgrounds armory is home to the Wyoming Star Quilters for two days. Quilts are displayed from noon-8 p.m. Saturday and again from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
After building up an appetite from the morning's events, head to St. Margaret's church, where the WWWC crab crack takes place from 4-6:30 p.m. All-you-can-eat crab is cooked by the Riverton Rotary club and served en masse to the attendants. Tickets are $25 each before the event and $30 at the door.
The Riverton Artists Guild sponsors the quick draw event at 6 p.m. at St. Margaret's. Artists will complete a project within an hour while the public watches. The pieces will be auctioned off later in the evening.
The Wild West Winter Carnival's king and queen will pass on the belt buckle, crown and sash to the new king and queen at
8 p.m. A junior king and queen will be crowned, with associated scholarship prizes awarded.
The second remote control fly-in is from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the Riverton Middle School gym.
The WWWC Gala is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Bar 10. The final event, a remote control car race sponsored by Hammer Electronics, The Webwright and Wind River Casino, will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 18 and Feb.19 at the Wind River Casino.
As of Friday afternoon, the Wild West Winter Carnival Medallion still had not been returned to The Ranger. The ninth of 10 possible clues was published Friday. The medallion's finder wins $500.
