RHS track teams best Lander in early dual meet

Mar 28, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The meet was Riverton's second of the season, Lander's first.

Ashtyn Leisy captured three individual track and field titles to pace the Riverton High School girls in a dual victory over Lander Valley High School at Wolverine Field.

The RHS girls beat the LVHS Tigers 94-54 Wednesday afternoon.

Leisy was the overall high-point athlete.

Behind two victories apiece from Lane Savage and Sean Watts, the Wolverines outlasted the Tigers 82-74.

The competition was the second one of the season for the Wolverines and was Lander's season opener.

"Overall, I was extremely happy with the effort and selflessness of the entire team," RHS co-head coach Jorah Griffith said. "I asked the girls to step up in more ways than one. I was not disappointed.

"Smaller meets like a dual really gives our younger athletes a chance to play a big role on the team. A lot more is expected from them than usual. In this case that expectation really pushed them to produce. It's always a good thing when our younger kids get a taste of success."

Griffith found out the Wolverines will be in any event to score points for the team.

"I learned that this is a team that is willing to put the team's success ahead of their own," Griffith said. "You can preach this concept over and over, but is something that the kids need to understand and put into practice for themselves."

RHS and LVHS will now prepare for the Roy Peck Invitational Saturday, April 6, at Wolverine Field. "I feel really good with where we are at right now," Griffith said.

"We do need to work on conditioning, but that is expected early in the season."

Girls

Leisy tasted first in the 200 meters with a time of 28.13.

She placed in the top spot in the 400 meters in 1:08.12 and added another first in the long jump with a distance of 15-7.

Jensyn Pettit won the 300-meter hurdles for Riverton in 50.17 and the high jump (4-5).

Griffith felt Jordan Settlemire displayed a good effort in her mid-distance races.

"They are outside of her normal lineup, and she did it with a great attitude," Griffith said.

Boys

Savage powered his way to the top position in the discus with a throw of 124-9.

Savage was marked in the shot put in 47-0.75.

Watts had the quickest time in both the 100 meters in 11.68 and in the 200 meters 24.27.

Brandon Fullerton won the high jump with a 6-2 leap in his first track meet of the season.

The dual meet wasn't a state qualifying event.

The height to qualify for the Class 4-A state meet is 6-1.
