Lander boys dropped 47-38 by Powell to end state tourney

Mar 11, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Powell claimed a 47-38 victory Friday over Lander Valley High School in the Class 3-A consolation championship game at Casper Kelly Walsh High School.

The setback left the Tigers with a 1-2 record at the Class 3-A state tournament. LVHS checked into the field as the No. 3 seed from the West 3-A

LVHS opened the tournament losing to Wheatland 43-33 on Wednesday in the first round at Casper College.

The Tigers kept their season alive by beating Buffalo 60-46 Thursday at the Casper Events Center.

LVHS finished the win vs. the Bison shooting 63 percent from the field, a big improvement over the 28 percent performance in the first game.

"We shot the ball a lot better against Buffalo than we did against Wheatland," LVHS coach Terry Hopkin said. "If we would have shot like that on Wednesday, we would be playing in a different game. I thought that the kids responded really well."

Powell controlled the game from the start on Friday, jumping out to a 13-6 lead in the first period.

Powell added 10 more points in the second for a 23-16 lead at the break. LVHS outscored the Panthers 11-8 in the third quarter, but the Panthers clinched the win in a 16-point final period.

Chase Partridge of Powell had a game-high 23 points.

Lander's Zach Sanders, Austin Roberts and Derek Peil all scored eight points apiece.

Simpson returns

Tanner Simpson was cleared on Tuesday night by his doctor in Laramie to play on Wednesday. He had suffered a torn meniscus in his knee and had surgery on Feb. 21.

The two-time all-state player didn't start in the game and checked in at the 1:49 mark of the first quarter when the Wheatland Bulldogs were up 12-5.

"In the first quarter, he fell down on his knee and it kind of scared me," Hopkin said. "We had to take it and see how he did."

Simpson played nine minutes in the game and scored five points, three of those in the closing moments of the game.

Simpson scored two points vs. Buffalo and none in the loss to Powell.
