2-A schools take team titles at Roy Peck Invite; SHS, Wind River win

Apr 7, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Wind River boys and the Shoshoni girls won the team titles Saturday at the annual Roy Peck Invitational track and field meet.

The two Class 2-A schools showed their strength in all areas of the track lineup to bring home the team trophies at Wolverine Field in Riverton.

In the boys team race, the Wind River Cougars scored 135 points for the victory.

Shoshoni placed second with 109 points. The Riverton Wolverines came in third at 91 points. Burlington finished fourth (88 points), and Evanston ended fifth (66).

"It was cold this morning," WRHS coach Dirk Gosnell said. "Our times and distance throws weren't as good as we had anticipated. I'm really pleased with how our kids participated."

The Cougars won their own track meet last week to start the season on a high note.

"Our boys did really well," Gosnell said. "Our girls are improving. We just need to continue to do what we have been doing. We just need to really focus on our conditioning this week, so we can just keep on knocking those times down."

In the girls standings, SHS put together 127 points for the top spot. Evanston finished second (116.50). Riverton High School ended third (104.50), Worland finished fourth (104).

"We performed as a team," SHS senior leader Sarah Thompson said. "Everybody stepped up in their positions. We had some injuries and they weren't running. As a group, we just dominated. I'm very proud of the whole team."

Riverton and Evanston both compete in the Class 4-A division.

"It was a privilege to win the whole thing," Thompson said. "It was only recently that Shoshoni wasn't even able to place at a meet. To come out on top in a 4-A school was a great feeling."
