Tigers dominate Douglas, fall to Buffalo

Apr 14, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Lander Valley High School Tigers managed to split on the road despite missing their starting goalkeeper, Jess Oldham.

The Tigers dominated Douglas 6-1 Friday night and fell to Buffalo 3-1 Saturday afternoon.

"We played really well both games," said LVHS boys soccer coach Dan Howlett.

Oldham missed the games because of a scheduling conflict with an FFA conference.

Lander's Adam Shipley filled in for Oldham for the two matches.

Shipley is a senior, but this is his first soccer season.

"Adam came out to be one of our film crew," Howlett said. "We let him know that we needed another goalie."

Howlett said Shipley was pretty nervous in his first varsity experience.

Shipley recorded two saves against Douglas. He had nine saves in the loss to Buffalo.

"Adam was out of position a couple of times," Howlett said. "We were happy with Adam."

Buffalo went up early for the 1-0 lead.

LVHS tied the score in the final minute of the half with a shot from Kyle Leemon.

Buffalo scored in the first 15 seconds in the second half.

"It was just a long shot that got past Adam," Howlett said.

Buffalo scored its final goal on a set play late in the match.

"The Buffalo player made a great shot," Howlett said. "We got a lot that we can take away from the weekend."

Buffalo is one of the top teams in Class 3-A.

"Buffalo was a real physical game," Howlett said.

In the win over Douglas, Eli Lowham had the only goal in the first half at the 24th minute.

It was all LVHS in the second half.

Noah Lowham started the scoring at the 42nd minute. Leemon tallied two goals, and Trapper Lee tallied one.

The Tigers challenge the Riverton Wolverines at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Riverton.
