County athletes turn out solid performances at Rock Springs

Apr 16, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

The Ted Schroeder Rock Springs Invitational was originally scheduled for just a few local teams and the schools on the I-80 corridor, but weather-related cancellations in Ethete and Glenrock turned the meet into one of the largest in recent history.

The Casper Kelly Walsh girls and the Rock Springs and Casper Natrona boys dominated the event, but Fremont County schools had solid performances in spite of the Sweetwater County wind and the large number of competitors.

Riverton's Ashtyn Leisy was the lone Fremont County champion with a winning leap in the long jump of 16-5 1/2. Leisy was also third in the 200-meter dash.

Class 1-A Dubois senior Rachelle Leseberg competed well against the larger schools with a third in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the long jump, just 3 inches behind Leisy. Leseberg had a breakthrough in the triple jump with an impressive leap of 34-0 to take second.

Riverton's Jensyn Petitt was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, while Jordan Settlemire cleared 6-6 in the pole vault and ended in a 13-way tie for third place.

Lander Valley's Baylie Bullington took seventh in the 100-meter dash and added a fifth in the triple jump.

The boys were paced by Riverton sophomore Brandon Fullerton with a second in the high jump at 5-11.

Dubois junior Sterling Baker had perhaps the best overall performance of the meet with a season and Class 1-A best in the 110-meter high hurdles for fourth place with 15.31 seconds. He was third in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.42 with fellow Ram Rowan Hawk who was sixth with 43.84. Hawk added a 10-3 pole vault for seventh place.

Riverton's Trent Jorgason was fourth in the vault at 12-4 while Lane Savage tallied a fourth in the shot put at 46-7 and an eighth in the discus with a toss of 129-2.

Brytan Spoonhunter tallied an eighth for the Wolverines in the 3,200-meter run as did Sean Watts in the 200.

Wind River was paced by a sixth from Tyler Rupe in the 100-meter dash.

Lander's Tristan Herr finished sixth in the 400 and fifth and eighth in the 4x400- and 4x800-meter relays, respectively. Tuesday's Riverton Twilight Meet was postponed until April 30 because of the snow.
