Another strong showing for Riverton USA wrestlers

Apr 17, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Riverton USA wrestling club secured enough points to win its home tournament Sunday at Wolverine Gym.

In the two-day bracket, Riverton rolled up 224.5 points for the championship at the Rumble at the Rendezvous tournament.

The Windy City club from Casper finished second with 193 points. Lander was third (167 points), Pinedale finished fourth. There were 18 teams in the tournament.

"All the kids did well," Riverton coach Jake Briggs said. "We had more than 50 local kids show up for the tournament. They did great."

The first day was for the folkstyle tournament. The second day had the freestyle tournament.

"We just had a lot of kids in the big brackets," Briggs said. "We had a lot of top-six place finishes and a lot of first-place finishers. That just adds to the score."

Briggs was elated to see Riverton finish in the top spot.

"There were some powerhouse clubs there, with Green River being one of them," Briggs said. "Green River is always right there at the state tournament. They have a big, strong club. There were two Casper clubs there. They are also usually pretty stacked."

The age divisions in USA wrestling are 6-and-under, bantam, novice, intermediate, schoolboy, cadets and juniors.

"Our bantams and intermediates had the most success," Briggs said. "The competition stayed the same for a lot of those kids in both days."

State tourney next

Riverton is taking 24 wrestlers to the state USA tournament Friday through Sunday at the Casper Events Center.

"It should be a really good tournament," Briggs said. "Hopefully, we will see a couple of state champions and the lion's share of our kids to place." There will be folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman competition at the tournament.

"We are going to have the biggest showing in folkstyle, followed by freestyle," Briggs said. "We only have three kids that are going to wrestle Greco-Roman."

Briggs said the competition picks up at the state tournament.

"You will draw everybody from all four corners in the state," Briggs said.

"There will be some kids from the Gillette and Cheyenne areas that we haven't seen all year. Some of those kids are wrestling in Colorado tournaments and South Dakota tournaments."
