Stanford Lyle Salway Jr.

Stanford Lyle Salway Jr. died Monday, April 15, 2013, at Lander Valley Medical Center. He was 55 years old.

A wake and rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Rocky Mountain Hall. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, April 20, at Rocky Mountain Hall in Fort Washakie. Burial will follow at Chief Washakie Cemetery.

Stanford Lyle Salway Jr. was born Nov. 23, 1957, in Lander, the son of Stanford L. (Bucky) Salway Sr. and Zelma Aragon Robertson.

He was a lifelong resident of the Wind River Indian Reservation. He attended schools at St. Stephen's Mission, Chinle, Ariz., and received his CDL certification in truck driving in Colorado Springs, Colo. He participated in all sports while he was in school. After high school he traveled the United States and Indian country participating in rodeos. He became a World Champion steer wrestler.

His family said he loved spending time with his grandchildren, beading, making traditional spears and bows, reading, baking and being in the mountains.

He is survived by his mother, Zelma Robertson; fathers Stanford (Bucky) Salway Sr. and Lil Salway; children Chasity Begay, Beau Begay, Brandon Smith, Brittney Smith, Lynette Notah, Marlin Underwood, Marlow Underwood and Philanna Underwood; brothers Chuck Salway, Shanon "Buzz" Salway, Duane Salway, Marvin B. Salway, Lionel Pokibro, Pat ShiningElk, Donnie Ferris and Travis Thayer; sisters Leigh Anna Salway, Liz Salway-LittleCreek, Lynelle Pokibro, Michelle Nez (Philbert), Wanda (Rueben) Rosales and Sammie Ferris; godparent June Stagner; aunts Betty Glick, Roylance Aragon, Theresa PlentyHoops, Janet Beck, Lynn Salway, Lillian Aragon, Beverly Thomas, Judy Chingay, Rosemary Sam, Joy Moore, Marlene Friday and Ella Merriman; and uncles Tony Aragon, Lucky Salway, Haroldine Salway, Juan Martinez, Paul Begay, Rocky Friday, Arnold Friday, Lawrence Sam Sr., Burley Glick, Russell Hurtado, Oliver Aragon and Ivan Posey

He was proceeded in death by his stepfather, Theodore Robertson; grandparents Marcell Salway, Rose and Tom Wagner, Lucinda Susie Aragon, Jack and Tracy Harris and Nellie Scott; brothers Craig Enos, Marvin W. Salway and Shawn Pokibro; nephew Chance Salway; families Ourays, Aragons, Smiths, Tidzumps, Salways and Herefords; and many other relatives and friends.
