Apr 18, 2013 - StaffNorma Jean Bappe died Monday, April 15, 2013, at Help for Health Hospice Home in Riverton. She was 78 years old.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Evangelical Free Church in Lexington, Neb., with Pastor Duane Russell officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
Norma Jean Henderson was born Sept. 9, 1934, in Lexington, Neb., the daughter of Ross and Faye Henderson. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1952. She lived in and around Lexington her entire life with the exception of the last three weeks when she moved to Help for Health Hospice in Riverton.
She spent 10 years with Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator, and it was while at this job that she and her future husband, Robert "Bob" Bappe, met. He was a clerk with the Union Pacific Railroad, and they often spoke on the phone as he made long-distance business calls.
She married Robert Bappe on Sept. 29, 1953. They had two children, Michael and Mark. After 55 years of marriage, Mr. Bappe died in 2008.
She spent much of her life volunteering with the hospital auxiliary and Red Cross and was a mentor at the Morton/Sandoz Elementary for many years. The latter gave her special pleasure, and she often spoke about the children that she hoped to have influenced.
She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church.
Her family said she enjoyed people. She was easy to be with and enjoyed living a simple, frugal life. One of her greatest pleasures was digging up an old coin found using her metal detector; another was discovering a piece of depression glass at a garage sale.
She is survived by her two children, Mike and his wife Sandra of rural Cozad, Neb., and Mark and his wife Becky of rural Riverton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a special nephew Greg Henderson and his wife Kathy of Kearney, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father and only sibling, Duane Henderson.
Memorials may be made to Help for Health Hospice, 1240 Collegeview Drive, Riverton, WY 82501.
