Vogel pursuing rodeo full-time this spring
Apr 18, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
Josee Vogel has decided to become a full-time cowgirl this spring.
Vogel, a junior at Wind River High School, is coming off a solid performance in a rodeo last weekend at Laramie.
In the past, Vogel competed in track and field for the WRHS Cougars while trying to juggle time for rodeo practice.
"I just knew that track really wasn't what I wanted to do," Vogel said.
"I didn't have a real passion for it. I wanted to focus more on something that I had a little more passion for. It was a very tough decision."
Vogel won the goat tying title Saturday with a time of 7.810 seconds. The Laramie event had two rodeos, one Saturday and one Sunday.
"I think that it's a lot better," Vogel said. "I have had more time to practice rodeo."
Shai Schaefer of Torrington finished second with a time of 7.840. Lysite's Sierra Spratt placed fourth (8.370).
Vogel was also 10th in breakaway roping in 6.00 seconds. Before the spring season started, Vogel practiced this winter with the Central Wyoming College women's rodeo team.
"They have helped me a lot," Vogel said. "Practice is almost three or four hours."
After the fall season ended, Vogel was sitting third in the state in goat tying.
Jamie Thompson of Whitney, Neb., is first, and Newcastle's Ashten Marchant is second.
"I had a pretty good fall," Vogel said. "The goat tying is pretty tough. It's one of those deals that six or seven girls could win it at any time. There are different girls that are pretty tough."
The top four from each event qualify for the National High School Finals in July in Rock Springs.
Vogel wasn't the only Fremont County athlete to place high in the standings in Laramie. Kinnear's Deni Lou Nicholls won the pole bending title Saturday in 21.854.
In team roping, Kinnear's Coley Nicholls and partner Garrett Grieve were fourth after a time of 13.350 seconds.
In the Sunday rodeo, Drew Antone of Kinnear captured the bull riding title with 78 points. In goat tying, Riverton's Brooke Hursh was fourth (8.430 seconds), Spratt seventh (8.570) and Vogel ninth (8.570). Pavillion's Teal Stoll ended fourth in barrel racing (15.681), and Spratt was sixth in 15.897 seconds.
The next rodeo will be Saturday and Sunday in Rock Springs.
