Apr 19, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorFour Central Wyoming College cowboys are challenging for a spot at the College National Finals Rodeo.
Colton Miller is leading the Central Rocky Mountain region in the saddle bronc competition.
With two rodeos left in the college spring season, Miller has earned 635 points. He won the saddle bronc regional title last year as a freshman for the CWC Rustlers.
"One good thing about it is that he has some confidence," CWC rodeo coach Drew Schrock said. "He has that new saddle. He should keep on doing what he has been doing. He doesn't have to change anything up. He is riding one horse at a time. That is the most important deal."
The top three individuals in each event qualify for the CNFR.
Sheridan College's Ezekiel Thurston is second at 570 points. Travis Nelson from Gillette College stands third (335 points).
"Colton needs to go and have two more good rodeos," Schrock said. "The competition in saddle bronc is tough. The top eight or nine cowboys can go win the rodeo at any time with the right horse. You have to go with your 'A game' and be ready to perform."
Blaine Mathews sits fifth in the standings with 295 points.
"Blaine has a good attitude," Schrock said. "He doesn't worry about things. He just tries to get better all the time. He had a good practice this week. I'm sure he has a lot of confidence at the rodeo this weekend. To even have yourself in that position at this time of the year is a pretty neat deal. "
CWC's Stetson Jorgensen is in a tight race in the steer wrestling competition for a top three spot.
Jorgensen and Gillette's Ace Thurston are deadlocked for fourth with 235 points.
"We have worked on horses all week long to make sure that they are good to go," Schrock said. "They just need to go and have a game plan and follow it."
Casper's Morgan Jamerman and Carter Coble are tied for the lead at 255 points apiece.
Tyler Bond from Northeastern Junior College is third (245 points).
CWC's Cooper Clemens is sixth (230).
The Rustlers are seventh with 1,735 points in the regional team standings.
Eastern Wyoming is first with 3,433.33 points. The University of Wyoming sits second (3,230) and Gillette College is third (3,125).
The top two teams qualify for the CNFR.
The Rustlers will participate at the Casper College rode today through Sunday.
"We want to finish the season out with some wins and send some kids to the CNFR," Schrock said. "That will bring a lot of confidence to next fall."
