Football coaching issues on school board agenda at Tuesday session

Apr 21, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

Riverton High School parent Daryl Fullerton has asked that the Riverton school board hear parental concerns regarding the recent coaching turnover in the Riverton High School Football program.

The topic is on the agenda for Tuesday's (April 23) school board meeting.

Since the end of last football season, RHS head football coach Jeremy McCormick asked three veteran assistant coaches not to coach in the 2013-14 season, and four more assistant coaches since have resigned.

"I get briefed on actions that are taken. With the recent resignation of assistant coaches, I have to be more involved and have asked for more detail and a more thorough understanding of how things were done and why they were done," School District 25 superintendent Snyder said.

Riverton High School activities director Jeremy Hill said previously that he intends to recommend McCormick continue as head coach for the Wolverines and that he has initiated the process to find replacement assistant coaches.

At Tuesday's meeting, the board is to consider Hill's recommendation of Keith Brauneis, a history teacher at Riverton Alternative School, as an assistant football coach.

"The changes that have occurred in the assistant coaching ranks does bring concern to us. We want to have quality programs in all of our sports, and (football) is one that we are monitoring. We will do everything that we can to have quality coaches for our athletes," Snyder said.

Snyder added that Tuesday's meeting is an opportunity for parents to provide their input.

"We do not have any action items planned for Tuesday night," Snyder said.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the district central office on North Fifth West.
