Many medals for county tracksters in Thermopolis as mild weather arrives

THERMOPOLIS -- Perfect conditions greeted athletes from 23 schools Friday afternoon in Thermopolis for the annual Bobcat Twilight Invitational. With temperatures hovering around 70 degrees on a calm day, a reprieve was granted from winter's grip.

The meet had some teams with noticeable absences with athletes competing at the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper at the same time.

Lovell had several top performers competing in Casper, but the Bulldogs have great depth and held off Powell and a rapidly improving Lander Tiger team 63.25 to 60 to take the crown in the boys division.

On the girls side Powell dueled with Thermopolis for the crown.

Wind River

In spite of the clear blue skies, the powerhouse Wind River boys from Class 2-A must have felt a dark cloud hanging over their team.

The Cougar 4x100-meter relay is one of the fastest in the state, but a wild baton exchange in the second zone sent the baton flying high in the air and off the track. Wind River's stellar hurdler, Jesse Hawk, clipped the fourth hurdle, lost his balance and had to push the next hurdle over to avoid injury, disqualifying himself in the process. And Wind River junior Joe Lupher has switched to the spin technique in the shot put and dropped almost five feet off his best effort of the season as he struggled with the new style.

On the positive side for the Cougars, Hawk won the pole vault, and Shep Campbell took first in the high jump as Wind River still finished fourth overall. Without the mishaps, the meet was Wind River's to win.

Dubois

The Dubois Rams made another strong showing in both the girls and boys divisions, with Sterling Baker dominating both hurdle events and teammate Rowan Hawk just behind him.

Rachelle Leseberg continues to post some of the best times in the state in all divisions and posted career bests in the 100-meter hurdles and the 100-meter dash with times of 15.58 and 12. 46 respectively. She added a second in the long jump and a third in the triple jump.

Katherine Finley won the pole vault, clearing 10-0 for the Rams.

Riverton

The Wolverines had three athletes in Casper for the "meet of champs," but Riverton still took some gold, paced by Jensyn Petitt's first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. For the Wolverine boys, Riley Reichert won the discus with a toss of 141-5, and Shawn Watts took the top spot in the 200-meter dash in 22.98.

WIHS

Wyoming Indian's Alvin Spoonhunter took first in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs and posted the best times in Class 2-A in the process.

Lander

Head coach Bob Harms had his work cut out for him this season but the Lander Tigers are one of the most-improved team in the state in any division and have battled back into contention. Tristan Herr won the 400-meter dash in a solid 51.71 for Lander, and the 4x800-meter relay team took first.

WHLA

Western Heritage Lutheran Academy of Riverton saw solid performances by freshman Anastasia Strong, who won the 200-meter dash and cleared 5-0 in the high jump to win both events.

Shoshoni

Sarah Thompson won the 800-meter run, and the Wrangler 4x100-meter relay took gold as well.

Lawry Johnson won the 800-meter run for the Shoshoni boys

With just two weeks remaining until the regional track meets most Fremont County teams will converge on Lander next Saturday for the annual Shane Brock Memorial.
