Two state wrestling champions for Riverton at USA tournament

May 2, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Two Riverton USA wrestlers won individual state titles at the Casper Events Center in the folkstyle and freestyle brackets.

Wesley Briggs took the top position in the 95-pound intermediate folkstyle division.

Kellen Linnan captured a championship in the 75-pound bantam freestyle bracket. The state USA tournament was held April 19-21.

The age divisions in USA wrestling are 6-and-under, bantam, novice, intermediate, schoolboy, cadets and juniors.

"It was great to have two state champions," Riverton USA coach Jake Briggs said. Riverton placed seven wrestlers in the top six in their weight classes in the folkstyle division. Riverton collected six medals in the freestyle division. "In youth wrestling they don't do any seedings," Briggs said. "Some of our other wrestlers just got caught in some tough draws."

Wesley Briggs won his championship match 6-0.

"He beat everybody else by pins," coach Briggs said. "There are a few weights heavier than his in his division."

Linnan pinned everybody in his bracket at the state tournament.

"He has been in the top for the last two or three years," Briggs said.

Wind River freshman Keanan Pfisterer placed second in the cadet division at 113 pounds in the freestyle tournament.

"It was a very physical championship match," Briggs said. "It was one of the highlights, seeing that match.

Pfisterer was sixth in the cadet division at 120 pounds in the folkstyle tournament.

"Keanan will be a contender at Wind River (High School) for sure in the 2-A bracket," Briggs said. "He won't be able to wrestle with us anymore. We will be watching him during his high school career."

Cannon Campbell finished second in the bantam 75-pound bracket in the folkstyle and freestyle tournaments.

"Cannon has really come a long way," Briggs said. "We expect some great things out of him. Cannon won a lot of matches this year."

Stavin Pierson was second in the freestyle bantam 55-pound bracket and third in the folkstyle tournament.

"Stavin is in the middle of the road," Briggs said. "He has huge brackets. He is a kid who has a target on his back. He is always in the top three in the state. He is fun to watch because he is lighting quick. He is very aggressive."

The highlight of the season for the Riverton USA club was winning its home tournament last month at Wolverine Gym.
