Plenty of medals for local athletes Saturday at damp Shane Brock

May 5, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

It was perfect weather if you were a southbound Canada goose, but cold temperatures and intermittent spells of light to moderate rainfall made conditions for track and field less than desirable at the annual Shane Brock Memorial Meet in Lander.

With regional finals just a week away most teams competed Saturday in spite of the adverse conditions, although Shoshoni decided to withdraw from the meet just an hour into competition.

The Class 4-A Natrona County boys blew away the competition, outdistancing Class 3-A Jackson by 100 points. Riverton's Class 4-A boys were third.

On the girls side, the team scoring was much more balanced. Rock Springs took the crown over Evanston, with a surprisingly strong Big Piney team out of the Class 2-A West taking third with 64.5 points. Both Rock Springs and Evanston are 4-A teams.

There were some solid performances and many personal bests in spite of the wet conditions.

Riverton's Lane Savage posted a career high in the shot put, taking the event with a throw of 51-2.5.

Sean Watts won the 200-meter dash against a huge field that featured 11 heats in the event. Watts ran 23.27 for the Wolverines' other individual title.

Wind River's Jesse Hawk pulled a muscle early in the meet and qualified in the 110-meter high hurdles but elected only to pole vault after the injury. He won the vault, clearing 13-4. Riverton's Trent Yorgason was third with a height of 11-10.

Western Heritage Lutheran Academy's Seth Siebersma finished third on a slick surface in the high jump.

On the girls side, Lander's Shanda Post won the 300-meter hurdles in 49.62 with Western Heritage's Dani Havercamp finishing fourth.

Lander's Keeley Garvin was a runner-up in the metric mile with a time of 5:58.32.

Riverton was paced by Ashtyn Leisy's second-place effort in the long jump. Leisy was edged by just two inches by Brinae Sanders of Evanston. Leisy was also fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Dubois had a limited team at the meet, but Katherine Finley won the pole vault at 9-8.

The girls 100-meter dash had a Fremont County feel to it ,with Lander's Baylie Bullington second and Western Heritage's Anastasia Strong third. Havercamp finished seventh.

Strong was second in the very wet high jump clearing an identical height to Darian Williams of Rock Springs but taking second on number of missed attempts.

The Lander Tiger boys were paced by Jaxon Hedges with a fourth in the long jump and a seventh in the 100-meter dash.

Riverton heads to Casper this Friday for the West 4-A Regional meet, while the other seven Fremont County High Schools head back to Lander for the Class 1-A, 2-A and 3-A West Regionals.
