Man sentenced in fraud case

POWELL -- An Indiana man has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for his role in defrauding hospitals in Wyoming and Indiana out of nearly $1.7 million.

A federal judge on Monday also ordered Michael J. Plake of West Lafayette to spend three years on supervised release after his prison term.

Plake had pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiring to commit mail fraud and one count of conspiring to launder money.

An indictment alleged that Paul Cardwell, who was the former CEO of Powell Valley Healthcare in Wyoming and the former White County Memorial Hospital in Indiana, funneled hospital funds to a bogus staff recruiting firm that Plake supposedly ran, and that the men split the money.

Stadium getting new playing field

LARAMIE -- A new playing surface will be installed this summer at Wyoming's War Memorial Stadium.

The FieldTurf Revolution playing surface on Jonah Field will have a distinctive Wyoming design and will be completed in time for the 2013 college football season. It will cost about $500,000 and is being paid for with private funds.

FieldTurf has been installed at many top NCAA football stadiums for its grass-like performance and safety.

The new turf will include a depiction of the Teton Range in both end zones along with the traditional words "WYOMING" and "COWBOYS." Also new will be the lettering "7220 Feet" on both sidelines, indicating the stadium's elevation as the highest Football Bowl Subdivision field in the nation.

Sweetwater to double race days

ROCK SPRINGS -- In its third year of operation this year, Sweetwater Downs will double the number of horse racing days from four to eight.

Eugene Joyce is general manager of Wyoming Horse Racing LLC, which is the operator of the horse racing.
