May 8, 2013 - Jody Cardice, RivertonEditor:
I have seen a few other written comments from people in Riverton about the vacant lot at the intersection of East Main and Fifth streets that is now owned by the city. Now I am giving my opinion.
After all the talk about what was going to be done with that lot once it was cleared, it looks like the thing we have come up with is "dirt parking lot and place to abandon cars."
There is one piece of junk that has been sitting there for months. It is all dented up and jut sits there rusting out.
This is on city property. If I left a rusted-out old beater sitting on the street in front of my house all winter and spring, you darn well know the city would come after me with some kind of ticket or violation. But I guess it's OK if the city owns the land.
All of this talk about "beautifying" the city is a joke when that city lot right in the middle of downtown is just sitting there collecting junk. Is this how they would treat it if a park or public restroom area actually was put there?
It seems to me that this is not being handled very well.
