CWC names Rafferty to take over basketball program
May 8, 2013 - Staff
Central Wyoming College has hired Pat Rafferty to be the next head men's basketball coach for the 2013-14 season.
The announcement came on Wednesday morning.
Rafferty, a former Casper College coach and currently the director of basketball operations at the University of Texas-Arlington, is set to begin his coaching duties at CWC on June 3.
Rafferty was chosen instead of interim head coach Shelby Lindley. Lindley was elevated to the interim job in October after Curtis Condie was terminated.
Lindley guided the Rustlers to a 23-7 record this past season. Rafferty and Lindley both gave presentations a couple of weeks ago at the CWC campus.
There were at least 80 applicants for the job.
"I think that coach Rafferty brings a great deal of experience," CWC vice president of academic and student services Jason Wood said. "He has been successful at many different levels. He did really well at Casper. We were excited to see his application."
Rafferty has an overall junior college head coaching record of 291-196. He has had stints at Grayson College, Midland College and Casper College.
"He brings a lot to the table in his former players being coaches throughout the country," Wood said. "He has a lot of experience."
Rafferty also was an assistant coach at the University of Louisville.
He is a graduate of Buffalo High School.
"It's good to be in the position when you have that choice," Wood said. "We are excited that coach Rafferty will be leading our men's basketball program into the future."
