Seven pins helped Riverton High School overpower Laramie 54-15 Thursday night on the wrestling mat at Wolverine Gym.
Dustin Manor and TJ Turner started the separation from the Plainsmen early with back-to-back wins for RHS to get ball rolling.
Manor won his victory in the 132-pound class with a pin over Joe Nix. Turner edged Laramie's Brenden Sailor 9-4 at 138 pounds.
"Dustin and TJ got us a lot of momentum," RHS coach Jay Galey said.
The Wolverines are ranked No. 5 in the Class 4-A team rankings, while the Plainsmen aren't ranked.
"I just think that they all knew they had a task at hand," Galey said. "It's always fun to beat a 4-A school."
RHS started the 42-team Ron Thon Memorial Friday with opening round varsity matches at Wolverine Gym. The tournament will finish on Saturday afternoon with the finals. The finals are slated to start around 2 p.m.
The junior varsity division of the tournament is held at Riverton Middle School.
"I was a little afraid because of the magnification of Friday and Saturday," Galey said. "I thought that the guys came in pretty focused."
Before the match started with the Plainsmen, Riverton High School special education student Eddie Carr wrestled Wolverine junior TJ Galey in an exhibition match.
Carr was an honorary captain for the Wolverines in home duals with Casper Natrona, Worland and Laramie.
Coach Galey said Thursday was a perfect opportunity for Carr to be on the mat. The match was the last home dual of the season for the Wolverines.
Carr and TJ Galey wrestled for a few minutes. Carr raised his hands in celebration.
"Eddie was great and the crowd was great," coach Galey said.
Coach Galey said he picked his son, TJ, because the match with the Plainsmen started in the 106-pound bracket. Turner was also the other person coach Galey was going to pick for the exhibition match. Turner was in the 126-pound bracket.
"I wanted to make sure Turner was focused. I knew that TJ had enough time to get through that, and be ready to wrestle," coach Galey said.
Riverton's Drew Leach (160 pounds), TJ Galey (171) and Lane Savage (220) all put in short nights with pins in the first period.
Beau Batista (145) and Jacob Flescher (220) pinned their opponents in the second period.
Ahren Wempen added a pin for the Wolverines in the third period in the 126-pound weight class over Sean Thompson.
In the heavyweight match, Riverton's Dawson Steeds blanked Schad Wilson 5-0.
After a scoreless first period, Steeds picked up two points on a takedown in the second period.
Steeds scored a point on an escape and two more points on a reversal in the third for the victory.
Gavin Wilson received a forfeit for the Wolverines in the 113-pound weight class.
