Schools teaching bike, fire and school bus safety
May 15, 2013 - By Andrea Novotny, Staff Writer
Fremont County's public elementary schools host their annual bike rodeos until May 30.
Students will learn about bike safety, fall prevention, fire safety, helmet safety, pedestrian safety, seatbelt and booster seat safety, water safety and school bus safety.
School bus safety was added to the bike rodeo curriculum this year in response to a fatal accident that occurred at a bus stop last year.
Safety stations are led by firefighters, Wyoming Highway Patrol officers, corresponding EMS services, law enforcement officers, and community volunteers. Smokey Bear also will make an appearance at some of the events.
The event also includes a bike course inside an inflatable firehouse, bike inspections and helmet fittings. Helmets donated by the Lander Cycling Club are provided to any student who needs one.
Bike rodeos in Fremont County are coordinated by Injury Prevention Resources with the help of Safe Kids and Safe Communities. Sponsorship comes from several community businesses, including Conoco Philips and State Farm in Lander.
The following schools have scheduled bike rodeos this year: Wind River Elementary, Aspen Park Elementary, Arapahoe, Shoshoni, St. Stephen's, Fort Washakie, Wyoming Indian, Dubois, North Elementary, Gannet Peak, Rendezvous Elementary, Ashgrove Elementary, Jackson Elementary and Baldwin Creek Elementary.
