RHS girls, boys open track season at Natrona

Mar 16, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton High School has about 60 track and field athletes preparing for the 2012 season. The Wolverines have been working on different events since March 5.

"We have some good returners, but we also have a good group of incoming freshman," RHS co-head coach Tawn Gopp said. "Our throwers are looking the strongest on both the boys and girls sides."

Gopp is in charge of the boys, and Jorah Griffith will coach the girls.

RHS begins the season Saturday at a meet in Casper Natrona. The Roy Peck Invitational is planned for March 30 in Riverton. RHS hosts the Class 4-A West regional meet May 11-12 at Wolverine Track. RHS last hosted regionals three years ago.

Girls

"I have five girls who are going to be point-getters for us," Griffith said.

The shotput and discus tandem of seniors Hannah Svilar and Hannah Soll pace RHS.

Svilar won the Class 4-A state shotput title last year with a school record performance of 41-6.50. Soll was seventh (34-4).

Svilar recorded a second-place finish in the discus (129-3), and Soll came up fourth (115-2).

"They are looking pretty good," said Griffith about the tandem. "They are excited to get back into it. We will see how it all shakes out on Saturday."

Sophomore Jillian C'Bearing is slated for the 800-meter, 1,600-meter and the 3,200-meter runs.

"When we get to regionals, Jillian will be in four events," Griffith said. "She is somebody at the regional level that can score up to 30 points and really help our team out a lot. We are looking for her to be able to step it up." Sophomore Ashtyn Leisy qualified last year in the 400-meter run and in the long jump.

"She will be one of the top 400-meter runners at the regional level," Griffith said. "She will be in the top three in the long jump. She is just an all-around good relay person."

Senior Sheridan Smith should score points in the long jump, triple jump and in the high jump. Her fourth event will either be the 100 meters, 200 meters or a relay.

Boys

RHS senior Kole Stewart will lead the way in the 400-meter run and the pole vault.

Senior Tyler Graham is preparing to qualify for state again in the 300-meter hurdles and in the 110-meter hurdles.

"Tyler has come in fired up and ready to go," Gopp said.

Gopp has liked the way senior Ian McDonald performed in the distance events in the outdoor season. McDonald will run in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

"Ian is showing some huge improvement coming off the indoor season," Gopp said.

Senior Seth Withers is a leader for the RHS Wolverines in the sprints, and in the long jump.
