CASPER -- The Wyoming state track meet is well known for wind, heat, cold and rain, but not usually on the same day.
The annual event opened with near-perfect conditions but two strong fronts brought sheets of driving rain to Harry Geldien Stadium in Casper that postponed events twice on the opening day of the three-day meet.
Fremont County athletes from Class 1-A and 2-A performed exceptionally well in the early events. Dubois junior Sterling Baker has his best effort of the season in the discus, winning the Class 1-A event with a toss of 132-5. He also qualified for the fastest time in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Wind River's Jesse Hawk cleared 13-0 without a fault in the pole vault, then attempted 14-1 three times in an effort to break the long-standing Cougar school record. He is also seeded first in the Class 2-A 110-meter hurdle finals.
Wyoming Indian's Alvin Spoonhunter ran away from the field in the 3200-meter run. Spoonhunter continues his quest to win all three distance races, with the the 800 and 1600 still to come.
The Shoshoni 4x800-meter girls relay team broke it'd own state record with a 10:09, time but Lovell moved some girls around from regional competition a week ago and shattered the state record by 23 seconds in winning the event.
Wrangler sophomore Olivia Thompson placed second in the 3200-meter run to open the day Thursday.
Teammate Lawry Johnson was third in the boys 3200-meter run for Shoshoni and ran the opening leg of the school's third-place finish in the 4x800.
Jaxon Hedges paced Lander's opening-day effort with a sixth place in the long jump, and the Tigers' 4x800-meter relay placed seventh.
Ashtyn Leisy took fourth in the long jump with a personal best of 16-10.5 for Riverton.
The Wolverines' other opening day points came from sophomore Brandon Fullerton in the high jump. His 5-10 height placed eighth in Class 4-A.
The second rain delay was a big factor in the Class 1-A high jump. Anastasia Strong of Western Heritage Lutheran Academy in Riverton had the best qualifying height at 5-0, but as officials worked to dry off the saturated jumping surface Strong had to leave the event to run a qualifying heat of the 200-meter dash.
Just four minutes after finishing the trial she cleared 4-6 but couldn't clear the following marks and took third. She and teammate Dani Havercamp both qualified for the 200-meter finals.
St. Stephen's freshman Rachelle Lynch had a nice showing the 1-A shot put, taking fifth for the Eagles.
