Four Wolverines make all-state soccerMay 21, 2013 By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
Four Riverton Wolverines have been voted to the Class 4-A all-state soccer list announced Monday.
Michael Jones, Kade Salisbury, Caleb Ogg and Tristan White made the elite squad.
Jones and Salisbury are seniors.
Ogg is a junior, and White just finished his sophomore season.
The postseason honors were selected by members of the Wyoming High School Coaches Association.
"I think that it's awesome to get four on the list," RHS boys coach Erly Cornejo said. "It's a tribute to the kids. We could have had a couple of others that were really close. This is just kind of a testimony to this team. It was an all around effort."
Xavier Webb and Aaron Nirider received Class 4-A West honors.
The Wolverines won the regular season title in the Class 4-A West conference.
RHS finished as the consolation champion last weekend in Rock Springs at the Class 4-A state tournament with a 2-1 record.
Cornejo said it was an "awesome achievement" for Jones to make the squad as a goalkeeper after taking over the full-time duties this season.
"He has done a really great job," Cornejo said. "He works hard in practice as a goalkeeper."
Jones gave up 21 goals in 18 games.
"He did have a lot of shutouts," Cornejo said. "I thought that he did a really nice job."
Salisbury controlled the midfield for the Wolverines.
"Kade is just a player," Cornejo said. "If you ask him to play anywhere in any system, he will go out and do it."
Salisbury was a force for the Wolverines on offense and defense.
"He is very consistent," Cornejo said. "He covers a lot of ground. He backs people up."
White led the Class 4-A division in scoring with 15 goals.
"Tristan is just a special player," Cornejo said. "You don't get them very often where they have a knack of scoring goals. That is a huge part of being a successful scorer."
The forward only played in 14 games.
"The other thing is that he is two-footed. You don't know if it's going to be with the right or left foot," Cornejo said.
Cornejo said Ogg's passion for the game helped him get a spot on the all-state squad.
"Caleb has a great touch on the ball with his feet," Cornejo said. "He has great touch on the ball in the air, and for a center back that takes you a long way. It makes your life a lot easier."
