Spectacular hole-out gives Utah golfer the Saltwater title in first hole of playoff

May 28, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Utah pro golfer Derek Fox holed out from 40 yards away on the first playoff hole to win the $10,000 first-prize money Monday at the annual Saltwater Classic golf tournament at the Riverton Country Club.

The stunning shot gave Fox the win over Nick Mason of Denver.

Fox hit his second shot over the green on hole No. 1 to set up his dramatic finish to claim the top prize.

It was the first time Fox has won the Saltwater Classic. He lives in Draper, Utah.

"I was pretty surprised that it went in," Fox said. "I was buried in the rough pretty bad. I knew that I needed to at least get it close. My goal when I hit the shot was to to give me an eight- or 10-footer for a par. It just hit on the right spot where I wanted it to land."

Fox forced the extra hole after he drilled a long birdie putt on No. 18.

"No. 18 was probably more impressive than the playoffs," Fox said.

"I played a really good back nine just to get into contention. I knew on No. 18 I had to make a birdie."

Fox ended the 54-hole tournament with rounds of 67 and a pair of 70s for his 207.

"It's a huge jump start for my career," Fox said.

"I was professional back in the early 2000s. I didn't play much golf for a few years."

Mason finished second after putting together scores of 67-69-71 -- 207, 9 under par after the regulation 72 holes.

The runner-up in the pro division received $3,000.

"Nick is a really solid player," Riverton Country Club golf pro Steve Johnson said. "He decided to come due to the purse increase. He plays a lot of bigger events. He is very well known for a lot of the big events.

He has had a really nice career."

Todd Tanner finished one stroke off the pace 70-68-70 -- 208. Tanner won $2,500. He won the Saltwater Classic title in 2011.

"Todd finished a little ahead of the other guys and when he came in he knew that he was going to finish one short," Johnson said. "He just knew what was going to happen down the stretch."

Amateur field

BYU golfer Justin Keiley won the amateur title Monday with scores of 71-65-73 for a 209.

College teammate Zac Blair finished second after three straight rounds of 71 for a 213.

"Zac was the No. 1 man this year, and Justin was the No. 2 man, which really shows the strength of the field that we had this year," Johnson said.

"It was just unbelievable strong."

Riverton Middle School eighth-grader Easton Paxton finished third (78-73-69 -- 220).

Utah State golfer Zach Waxler was sixth in the amateur field (71-73-78--22).
