Petition on the repeal of 'Hill bill' was not easy to locate
May 29, 2013 - Kathy Proskow. Riverton
It was reported in the news that the deadline for signing the petition to get the bill that took away the State Superintendent of Public Instruction's powers repealed was coming up Tuesday.
I would very much have wanted to sign that petition, but I never learned of any way to do it here locally. The information they provided online always referred me to someone in Cheyenne, and I couldn't ever get the petition in front of me to sign.
Maybe they just got all the names they needed in Cheyenne and Casper, or wherever, but if they do fall short of having enough names to get it on the ballot, I hope it isn't because they didn't try hard enough in Fremont County and other places.
I think they usually need to submit to the state a lot more names than the minimum required because so many signatures are ruled out because of being challenged in various ways. Because of the controversy around this issue, I am sure those who would take power from the voters will do whatever they can to keep this petition from getting on the ballot next year. They know it would pass overwhelmingly, so their only hope is to make sure we voters don't get afforded the opportunity to decide for ourselves.
This has been a very disgusting episode in our state government. There are many better ways this could have been handled if there really was such a problem with the superintendent, which I doubt there even was in the first place.
I wish the petition all the luck in the world in getting to the ballot. Just give us voters the chance and we will do what is necessary to set this back on the right track.
