May 29, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorThe Riverton Raiders open the home American Legion baseball season Friday night with Rock Springs in a doubleheader at Roy Peck Field.
The first pitch is thrown at 5 p.m.
The Raiders enter the doubleheader with a 1-4 record.
The victory was a 16-1 win over the Rawlins Generals.
The Raiders were going to open the home season Sunday, May 19, but the doubleheader was postponed because of a rain storm.
The doubleheader has been moved to Wednesday, June 5, in Riverton.
Rawlins has a 2-7 record.
In the last two outings on Saturday, May, 18, in Casper, the Raiders dropped a 12-2 decision to the Casper Drillers and lost 18-8 to the Laramie Rangers.
The games were stopped in the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.
"We are three or four bad innings from being 3-2," Riverton manager Brady Beers said. "In the last two games that we played against Laramie and Casper, our defense was just gone."
Riverton lost a close 7-4 battle to Green River.
In the three-run setback, Josh Parker threw more than 80 pitches for the Raiders. He went five innings.
"The difference between that game and our last two games was night and day on defense," Beers said. "I attribute that to how young we are. That is something that we have been working on."
Parker is scheduled to pitch in the home opener against Rock Springs.
"Josh has developed his own little pitch," Beers said. "He is a big leader out there. He just keeps on throwing strikes."
Riverton will be missing Andrew Von Rein and Teron Doebele for the home opener.
Von Rein is the starting shortstop, and Doebele plays in the infield.
Riverton plays a doubleheader Saturday in Rock Springs.
Rock Springs is 0-6 on the year.
"It's very important to play well in front of the home crowd," Beers said.
