Jun 9, 2013 - By Katie Roenigk, Staff WriterThe owner of a Rottweiler mix north of Riverton was issued a citation Wednesday after the dog reportedly injured a 7-year-old girl and killed an elderly poodle.
Reports state the girl was playing with the poodle in her great-grandma's yard when the Rottweiler mix approached.
"(It) attacked the poodle and killed the poodle, and in the process it injured the girl," Undersheriff Ryan Lee said, adding that the injuries weren't serious. "She had superficial scratches and abrasions."R32;The girl's grandmother reportedly refused offers for emergency medical services. The incident was
reported at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 10800 block of Wyoming Highway 789.
Deputies responded at about 8 p.m. Thursday to reports that someone had shot at a chained-up dog in the 300 block of Eight Mile Road.
Officials said the initial report was unfounded --according to witnesses, the dog had gotten loose and was harassing livestock on someone else's property.
"That property owner took exception," Lee said Friday. "They didn't shoot the dog, but they shot at it or near it to scare it off."
He said the dog's owner ultimately realized that he was in the wrong and said he would keep his dog confined from now on. Lee said the livestock owner was within his rights when he shot at the animal.
"Dogs running at large can be destroyed by the owner of the livestock or his representative if they are actively harassing or chasing livestock," Lee said.
